Principles of Building

Re: Tech Debt

“when you build a thing you cannot merely build that thing in isolation, but must also repair the world around it, and within it, so that the larger world at that one place becomes more coherent, and more whole; and the thing which you make takes its place in the web of nature, as you make it.”

— A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction by Christopher W. Alexander

A quote pulled by a once-high-school-classmate-turned-architect connection on LinkedIn. Curious how principles of building physical structures parallels the principles of building digital products.

The Driver of UX Principles

The balance between creativity and following the rules

Social media (namely, Instagram and TikTok), are designed to captivate the audience - so much so, users end up sinking unplanned amounts of time on each platform. If UX is constantly changing, wouldn't it make sense that because social media is where many people spend most of their time online, UX practices gradually become like what we see in social media? That said, do smaller companies TRULY get opportunities to innovate or express their brand? Or are they playing catch-up with what is practiced in social media? Is UX really about innovation/uniqueness, or is it about playing follow the leader? Who is the leader? What impacts the direction it moves in, and how can we: 1) combat addiction-forming design, 2) encourage uniqueness, and 3) predict upcoming principles?
